Who Can Benefit from Adult Psychoanalysis?

A person may seek out psychoanalysis because he is experiencing difficulty establishing and maintaining a rewarding career and/or love relationship. Typical symptoms addressed by psychoanalysis include anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem and sexual dysfunction.  Phobias, obsessions, compulsions and inhibitions or repeated failures in love and work relationships may also be indications for psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis requires the active participation of the patient in a process of self-understanding which often takes place on a daily basis over a number of years.  Thus the treatment requires that the patient be motivated to understand himself, have a capacity for introspection and have the time and patience necessary to tolerate the demands of treatment.  The purpose of the initial consultations is to determine if the person is likely to benefit from analysis.
