Visiting Scholars: Jason Brown, M.D., Jaak Panksepp, M.D., and James Schwartz, M.D.

Colloquia for Members

Colloquia on topics of clinical and theoretical interest to members are arranged each year by the Postgraduate Committee and presented by a senior member of the Institute or by a guest scholar. These colloquia are open to all members and by application to qualified guests if space is available.

Works in Progess Seminar

Francis Baudry, M.D. and Daniel Birger, M.D., Co-Chairs

Monthly meetings are held in which members or guests present works in various stages of progress.  The presentation subjects are derived from the fields of theoretical, clinical and applied analysis, as well as from various other areas interfacing with psychodynamic thinking.  The meetings are conducted in a round table format; active interchange between presenter and audience is encouraged, with the aim of providing stimulation and an opportunity to elaborate ideas for both the presenter and the audience.  The seminars are open to members, students and guests, and take place on the third Wednesday of each month from September through June.

Mythology and Psychoanalysis

William Greenstadt, Ph.D.

This colloquium includes analysts and scholars in anthropology, classical, and literary studies. The primary purpose and program of the group is the investigation from the psychoanalytic viewpoint of myths, ritual, religion, and the classical literature utilizing mythical themes.

The Artist's Creation

Daniel Birger, M.D. and Ellen Glass, M.D.

The premise of this group is that the authors of good literature embody psychoanalytically valid principles of mental functioning in their novels, plays, and short stories, whether these principles are utilized consciously or intuitively. Analysts as well as members of other disciplines are welcome. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month.

Check the schedule of upcoming events, or contact Ms. Zimmer for further information.

Measuring Psychoanalytic Work and Benefit: The Analytic Process Scales (APS)

Sherwood Waldron, Jr., M.D.

(follow link to Research Division)

This group has developed reliable rating scales for assessing the contributions of patient and analyst to the analytic work.  We are now completing a larger scale study of the process and outcome of three analyses, as assessed by the APS applied to recorded psychoanalytic sessions divided into segments.  This permits the study of what interventions under what circumstances facilitate the analysis.  In collaboration with another group we are developing outcome measures as well.  Those interested may participate by rating recorded sessions and then comparing scores with colleagues.  Meetings are twice monthly, generally the first and third Wednesdays.

Data presented by participants in other observational and/or research infancy groups is welcome.
