Child and Adolescent Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program

David Sawyer, M.D. and Mary Sickles, M.D., Co-Directors

The subtle meanings of a child's inner world are often overlooked in current symptom-based therapies. This intensive two-year program for mental health professionals provides an in-depth understanding of this inner world and explores the foundation and techniques of the psychodynamic treatment of children and adolescents.

Developmental perspectives, models of the mind, psychopathology, clinical assessment and technique are taught through a combination of seminars, infant-mother observation, supervision of individual work and case presentations. Instructors and supervisors are Child and Adolescent therapists affiliated with The New York Psychoanalytic Institute.

ADMISSION

Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and graduates of adult psychoanalytic and psychotherapy programs, who are currently engaged in or who are interested in developing a practice of child and adolescent psychotherapy, are invited to apply. They must be licensed in their field and insured. Application information may be obtained from The New York Psychoanalytic Institute Office.

THERAPY

Personal psychotherapy is recommended as a means for students to enrich their training experience.

FEES for 2009-2010

A non-refundable application fee of $50 should accompany the application.

An annual combined tuition and supervisory fee of $4,645 is to be paid in two equal installments by August 15th and February 15th.

ADVISORS

Advisors will be assigned to each student to act as advocate and mentor.

SUPERVISION

Participants will be assigned two supervisors from the faculty and meet with each for 33 weeks per year for two years. Students will be expected to present detailed process notes of at least one child and one adolescent psychotherapy case from their own practices. The supervisory focus will be the inner mental life of the child as seen through the play, language and behavior in the sessions, and through the relationship to the therapist. The work with parents will also be discussed as a tool to understanding the child in the larger context of family, school, and peers.

SEMINARS

Two classes will be held weekly from 7:30-10 P.M. for an academic year of 33 weeks. These seminars will include psychoanalytic theory, development through childhood and adolescence, psychopathology and issues of technique and assessment. Continuous case seminars will be held with both child and adolescent cases presented by faculty. Continuing education credit is available under the auspices of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
